We had a Windows 2003 AD in the past.
Added 2 Windows 2008 R2 Servers that were promoted to DC's. Then demoted 2003 Server.
So we have 2008 R2 only DCs which were running at domain functional level 2003 for a while.
We have updated the level to 2008 R2 and we were going to rename the domain (the current name is the old domain name a valid internet name which is no longer ours) External domain is a new name.
Anyway... what led me down this road was the research in renaming the domain... leading to prep work... leading to an error showing up in DCDiag... leading to a MS Article Q312862 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312862?wa=wsignin1.0 which is geared to Windows 2003. I followed it anyway and didn't find any issues.
Then I found this blog post http://workinghardinit.wordpress.com/2011/01/06/dcdiag-exe-problem-on-windows-2008r2-verifyenterprisereferences-indicates-problem-missing-expected-value-points-to-knowledge-base-article-q312862/ .
Which states:

The log points to a knowledge base article at but that has no relevance here. This is a phantom error when found under following circumstances. It occurs on Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2 when you are running in Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2 domain
functional level. Since Windows 2008 the File Replication Service (FRS) that sysvol uses has been replaced with the Distributed File Replication service (DFRS) as used by DFS. If you’re not yet running DFRS when you can (which is highly recommend
http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2010/04/22/the-case-for-migrating-sysvol-to-dfsr.aspx but not required), you’ll see this error show up when running DCDIAG.exe, so no real issue at all.

Soooo... this lead me to FRS vs DFRS. Did some digging and I saw a post saying when the forest level and domain level are raised to 2008 r2 it will switch from FRS to DFRS. I don't know if that is accurate or not.
More research led me to "DFS Operations Guide: Migrating from FRS to DFS Replication" and "Sysvol Migration from FRS to DFSR"
At this point I know that I definitely need to follow the procedures for "Sysvol Migration from FRS to DFSR", but I do NOT know if I have to follow the DFS Operations guide. It seems more geared to 2003R2.
At this point I could use some guidance. Do I need to go through the Migrating from FRS to DFS steps or just the Sysvol Migration from FRS to DFSR?
I don't recall ever doing anything with namespaces or DFS in the past. I loaded up DFS Management tool from a 2008 R2 member server (not DC) and it doesn't find any namespaces or replication groups for the domain or the dc's.
Maybe I do still need to do the "Micgrating from FRS to DFS steps", but I just won't have anything to migrate... essentially just enabling the roles on the server.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
