Renaming a Domain Controller to an old and removed system name

Hi,

I am currently going through a renaming process where I need to change the name of my Primary DC to the name of the old primary which has been totally removed from the network and AD.

I found this page on renaming: http://www.petri.co.il/rename-windows-server-2008-domain-controllers.htm

and used this command:

NETDOM computername KUKU-SERVER.PETRI.LOCAL /add:DC-SERVER.PETRI.LOCAL

which works totally and I can see the secondary name in ADSIEdit.msc by right clicking on the computer, selecting properties and viewing the msDS-AdditionalDnsHostName attribute.

The problem which I haven't been able to work out is why the next command in the chain is failing:

NETDOM computername KUKU-SERVER.PETRI.LOCAL /makeprimary:DC-SERVER.PETRI.LOCAL

basically the CLI comes out with the fact that it has failed and that it's unable to make the new name the primary then states "The error is:"

which is totally blank..... ??

The old server name running on a Windows 2003 server has been totally removed from the Domain Controllers list in: Active Directory Computers and Users and also the DNS records seem to have updated correctly pointing the new name to the current IP address.....

I am running Server 2008 R2 for this and I'm guessing I missed a step somewhere although I can't work out what as I can't find any documentation on it!!

If anyone can give any advise or help that would be really great.

Thanks!
