Creating a DNS A Record for depricated domain controller good thing to do?

Hi all,

I have been tasked with a full domain controller upgrade from 2003 to 2008 R2.  Company won't go to 2012 till next year but it's on the cards at least.

The upgrade has basically been to install brand new servers running 2008 R2 alongside the existing ones.  Everything has gone perfectly.  New domain controllers have replicated (KCC has done its job with AD replication), DNS, DHCP, FSMO, Time all moved over and working without issues.

I'm now at the stage where I'm thinking about switching off the old servers (will power them off for two weeks before finally doing a dcpromo to remove).  The only issue is that we have some old legacy custom made applications which have been hard coded to reference domain controller by name.

Can I create a DNS A Record for the old domain controllers using the new domain controller IP address.

so if a client is hard coded to access OLDDC01.DOMAIN.LOCAL it will resolve via DNS to the new domain controllers IP

I'm sure doing this will be frowned upon, but changing all these legacy applications is a no no

There is currently no way I can turn off these old servers if I can't guarantee these old applications will still work

Thanks
