We are looking at a company moving our PDC from 2003 to 2008 R2.
Currently we use mapped drives for the users files. This has work and is fine.
The company is suggesting that we move to folder redirection, in other words users log in and then their "my documents" is on the file server. Currently they have to go to their H: drive to get to their personal folder.
Some questions:
Is this a better method. The company is saying this is the way things are done today. Thats true but so what?
What are the advantages ? All the advantages I see are really similar to mapped drives eg We back up the users files on the file server, we will do the same on the redirected files (same place really on the sesrver)
They are also saying that best practice is not to use the same name for the server. That this can be difficult and have some problems. The problem is that any unc paths will now not work eg\\oldname\share verses \\newname\share.
They tell me that basically the files will be on both the workstation and the server, thus if the network is off line people will be able to work. I can imagine that when the network connects back up there must be issues?
ARe there any drawbacks to this type of set up.
Thanks.
