Trusts, NETBIOS Names and the Microsoft Best Practice

I have a question regarding the best practice for naming Active Directory domains.  I believe it is MS best practice to use a subdomain of your companies registered domain name so as an example northamerica.company.com as your AD Domain.  I understand why they recommend this over using .local or using the second level domain name of company.com

BUT if I name it northamerica.company.com, ad.company.com or internal.company.com  that would make the Netbios name of my domain either northamerica, ad or internal.  what happens if my company merges with another company who has followed the same best practice and also has a netbios name of northamerica.  In this instance I think I am right in saying I would not be able to set up a trust between the two domains.

Is this correct? and also if so what can I do to mitigate this senario?

Thanks in advance
