win2008 r2 nis server

I have installed the Role of Identity Management for Unix including the server for Network Information Services.  That will make the Win2008 server looks like an NIS server.  Our linux clients are Rhel 4,5,6.  My linux clients are binding correctly and I can "su - username" to any of the regular users without a problem.  The issue I am having is that I cannot ssh in from a remote computer as a regular user.  I get a password denied every time.  This is a test setup, so everything is default.  It should be very straight forward.

any ideas?
