Domain controller keeps deleting its host A record

I have the following issue with a DC:

  • Cannot ping a branch DC
  • DC is configured to point to a different DC for its primary DNS server (we have our branch DCs pointing to a DC in our hub site for their primary DNS. I know it is recommended in some configurations to point them to themselves, but our current DNS config is still considered valid by Microsoft and we are not changing it)
  • Found host A record missing in DNS (NS record and SVR records are present)
  • Ran ipconfig /registerdns on the branch DC and it successfully updated the hub DC with its host A record
  • Forced replication from hub DC to branch DC, but branch DC did not update DNS with its host A record (even after waiting a few minutes and reloading DNS on the branch DC)
  • Forced replication from the branch DC to the hub DC and found the hub DC removed the branch DCs host A record!

What could be causing this DC to remove its own host A record?

Thanks for any help, let me know if more info is required.
