NT5DS stops responding when running adprep /domainprep /gpprep on Windows 2008

I've got a Windows 2008 Standard x64 SP2 server. It's the only domain controller currently in the domain (there was a previous Windows 2003 DC that was retired and removed some time ago), and holds all the FSMO roles (verified by running netdom query fsmo , everything shows as this server).

I've got a new Windows Server 2008 R2 server that I want to take over directory services for the domain (Planning to Move DNS and all FSMO roles). As the first step, I'm running the adprep commands from the copy on the Windows Server 2008 R2 that I have copied off to a folder on the hard drive.

I was able to run adprep /forestprep successfully. When I run adprep /domainprep, it appears to run successfully, and then gives me the message that "The new cross domain planning functionality for Group Policy"... and that I need to run adprep /domainprep /gpprep on the DC with the Infrastructure Operations Master Role.

When I try to run adprep /domainprep /gpprep , I get a message saying NT5DS has stopped working.

I run dcdiag /v , the only errors I get are a few DCOM errors to offline machines in the system log.

When I run repadmin /replsum , It don't get any result (as there shouldn't be any replication since this is the only DC in the forest).

The domain and forest functional level are at Windows Server 2003, I restored a backup to a VM environment for testing purposes and upped the level to 2008, but this didn't make a difference.

I looked at theADPrep log in C:\Windows\debug\logs\ and have posted it below.
