I have a situation where a two-way domain trust is already in place between two different domains that are in there own forests. There is only one domain in each of these forests. Ideally this should have been setup as a two way transitive forest trust, but for whatever reason it was not. This setup is in a production environment and for the most part it works, however we have been running into various annoying issues with Exchange and Operations Manager which I believe stem from not having a proper forest trust in place.
My question is, can I create a forest trust for these two forests while this domain trust is already in place? Or can I break the domain trust, recreate it as a forest trust and not lose or have to recreate any of the relationships or permissions that are currently in place with the domain trust. Specifically I currently have linked mailboxes setup in exchange that are working through this domain trust and network shares with file permissions based on groups in both domains and I don't want these to be harmed or altered in the process of doing this.
Guidance would be appreciated.
