Hi All (this is my first post)
Here is the summary..
I am in a new role where the network is in trouble due to old hardware.
Both DC's are 8 years old and running Windows 2008 Server on these IBM Servers.
I have purchased 2 new DELL Servers that are R420 and R720. These servers will be made the new DC's.
I will be using Windows 2008 (don't know if I should use: stnd, ent, R2 etc)
Originally when I started and theses servers were showing signs of failed drives, bad reboots etc I used Acronis 11.5 Advanced Server with Universal Restore to take an image from IBM and restore it to DELL. There were no errors and everything
went fine.
The IBM server along with another IBM server are both DC's and run DFS.
When I brought the DELL online and turned off the IBM server and assigned the IP 10.10.10.14 (which was the IBM server's IP), users can see the DFS shares, but have no permissions to it. Everything else was working fine except for authoritative rights.
Any how moving forward I thought it would be best to just rebuild these new servers from scratch and then promote them.
Can anyone help with the following:
1. What version of Windows 2008 Server should I use? We have licenses for all versions I listed above.
2. The R720 will also be a DC and a fileserver running DFS so is there a difference in OS i should be using vs the R420?
3. I am comfortable with loading the OS, Firmware, Drivers, joining the domain, running DCPROMO...but can someone help with the next steps in:
- Changing FSMO roles, How to make sure Exchange 2010 will reconnect, and any other considerations?
