Problem adding Windows Server Standard 2008 R2 box as a Domain Controller

I'm attempting to replace a Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 domain controller with a Windows Server 2008 Standard R2 box. My current domain controllers are:

  • Windows Server 2008 Standard R2 (Global Catalog) (let's call it "DC2")
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 (Domain Controller) (let's call it "DC3")

I've added the Active Directory Domain Services role on a new Windows Server 2008 Standard R2 box (from now on - "DC1"). I've run the "adprep /forestprep" command on DC2 and it finished correctly. I've attempted to run "adprep /domainprep" on DC3 (because it's the infrastructure operations manager and because when I run "dcpromo" on DC1 it demands it) but I get an error indicating that the "adprep.exe" file is valid, but is for a different machine type. I've considered transferring the infrastructure operations manager role to DC2, but I get a dialog box that warns against it.

I've only the two active domain controllers and it appears that I can't (shouldn't) transfer the infrastructure operations manager role to a domain controller that has the global catalog and, conversely, I probably can't (shouldn't) add a global catalog to a domain controller that is the infrastructure operations manager - at least that's the way it seems.

Would it be feasible to "deactivate" the global catalog on DC2 and then transfer the infrastructure manager role to it? Once that's done, it seems I should be able to run the "adprep /domainprep" command on DC2.

I'm looking for any advice and/or suggestions I can get.

Thanks in advance.
