Home Folder on user's AD account

I'm running into a problem where new users home folders are not being created automatically. I've verified that permissions are set properly on the share and folder (see: http://blogs.technet.com/b/migreene/archive/2008/03/24/3019467.aspx )

I'm setting the Home Folder property on the new AD user account to use the H: drive and connect to \\server\share\<username> just like existing users.

As a test I modified an existing user to use a \\server\share2\<username> for a home directory and it fails. If I change it back to the original location it works again. Share2 is identical to Share

Also I've done this change with the GUI tools and through the dsmod CLI tool. (We have 2k8 DCs, no powershell for me) both produce the same result.

I set up auditing on the folder for the share for all events and I'm not seeing anything in the event logs.

How do I trace this? and then fix what is preventing this from working.
