AD authentication/DNS Server question regarding backup

Hi all,

I'm a cisco guy, but I had a question regarding authentication and DNS lookup. I setup our sites and services recently (it was never configured) for BOS and PHY, also all of our workstations/citrix VDI's have 2 DNS server points to a primary and secondary DNS server. TOday we had an issue with our main AD/DNS server (BOSTON) with the FSMO roles attached to it blue screened. The only reason we figured it out is because we noticed we couldn't connect to our citrix environment web portal, only via RDP using an IP. So i tried to ping the DC server and i couldn't by name or IP...It was our Boston DC (FSMO roles) that took a dump but our Philly DC was up and running.

What happened when the DC server goes down in Boston (FSMO role, DNS, AD, etc)? Are the clients automatically redirected to Philly DC server? Do the clients have to ipconfig /registerdns to authenticate to the Philly server? Should it automatically do it? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
