Restoring Active Directory to Different Hardware - Server 2008 R2

I'm currently in the process of working on disaster recovery within my organization. I have scheduled full, bare metal backups of important servers such as the mail server and the domain controller, in the event of catastrophic failure. From what I know that's the only way to backup Active Directory (well, system state, but might as well go bare metal then) aside from replication, of course.

However, my problem lies here: if we have an event where the original servers are gone beyond recovery (fire, explosion, etc), how can I recover said backup to different hardware? I've been trying to recover to a virtual machine for over a week now, but to no avail. When I try to restore, once I reboot I get a BSOD - 0x0000007B.

If someone could shed some light on my situation, I would greatly appreciate it.
